As Principal Technologist with the Open Data Institute, Timothy Hill had two roles. His chief specialisation is in data management infrastructure: on how data technologies and innovation can be used to help people, organisations, and communities make better decisions more quickly. In this area he has a particular interest in open standards for data as a means to foster information interchange and communities of practice, acting as chair for the OpenActive family of standards and as a consultant on a range of other data specifications. However, he also has an extensive background, and continuing interest in, data pipelines, ETL/ELT processing, and search engineering: anything that helps get good data collected, used, and ultimately transformed into well-grounded insights and decisions.
In addition to his work on data-processing tech, Timothy also had responsibility for overseeing the work of the ODI’s Technology Team. As with his own specialisation, the activities of the Tech Team are wide-ranging: on the one hand we address fast-evolving, headline-grabbing areas like Artificial Intelligence, Privacy Enhancing Technologies (PETs), and algorithmic auditing, while on the other ensuring that server loads are kept balanced, datastores consistent, and ODI and client tooling bug-free and reliable.
When not juggling these responsibilities, Timothy enjoys running, cycling, and learning foreign languages and musical instruments badly. He holds a PhD in Classics from Royal Holloway, University of London.
