Ian Cheng is a Consultant at the ODI

Ian joined the ODI as a Consultant in September 2022. He is passionate about the social benefits that data can bring, and his current work focuses on building data strategies and promoting data sharing in the net zero, energy and healthcare sectors. Ian has a journalism and policy background.

He started his career as a radio journalist covering human rights and housing issues in his hometown Hong Kong. From there he joined the local government as a policy consultant, developing policies and managing a broad scope of public sector projects relating to innovation, proliferation financing, covid response and waterfront placemaking.

Ian holds a MSc in Data and Society from the London School of Economics, where he researched on why and how people resist contact tracing technologies, and was awarded the Excellence in Media and Communications (Data and Society) Prize.
