For the second Canalside Chat of 2022, Emma Thwaites (Director of Communication and Marketing, ODI) will be in conversation with Miranda Sharp (CEO, Metis Digital) about data sharing and the need for new business models.
Most businesses now recognise the value of data sharing. It’s difficult to find someone who disagrees with the idea that more data should be shared, and that more data sharing could benefit both people and the planet.
However, there’s still hesitation from businesses around actually sharing the data that they hold – including concerns around privacy, security and commercial liability. There can even be friction when sharing data within a business – from conflicting team priorities, to miscommunications about the specifications of why certain data was collected.
So, how do businesses make this data sharing sustainable?

About the speakers
Emma Thwaites has led the ODI’s communication team since 2012. She has 30 years’ strategic communication experience, gained in roles at the BBC and UK Cabinet Office.
A former journalist and editor, she currently works with ODI’s marketing, production and PR specialists and advises the board and the wider leadership team.
Miranda Sharp is the CEO of Metis, which she set up to connect data people and their assets with opportunities to create value. Her interest is in enabling better decisions with the benefits of data and innovative business models. She advises commercial clients alongside, the Mayor’s Smart London Board and Infrastructure Advisory Panel, Centre for Cities think tank, Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) Technology Advisory Panel, the National Digital Twin Programme, Digital Transformation Task Group, and the award-winning SME See Sense.
Previously at Ordnance Survey, she founded and lead the cross-functional practice which collaborates with enterprises from the public and private sectors, academic researchers, and entrepreneurs from OS’s Geovation community in the use and exploitation of place-based data.
Miranda is passionate about the data which will fuel a digital economy, smart infrastructure and business models which will benefit humans and do good.
