Join Amanda Naylor (Manchester Youth Zone) and the Emma Thwaites (ODI) to join the discussion about the role that data can play in tackling food insecurity

This event has been postponed

Join ODI Director, Emma Thwaites in conversation with Amanda Naylor OBE, CEO of Manchester Youth Zone – a youth and community charity working with families in one of England’s most deprived areas.

Food insecurity is rising, and research from the ODI collates more than a dozen datasets from charities and government sources for the first time. The research, with an accompanying data visualisation, is set to be published in early October and will be showcased at this ODI Canalside Chat.

The panellists will discuss the role of data in understanding and tackling social issues with a focus on the growing challenge of food insecurity. They will reflect on the newly revealed findings of the ODI’s research and explore how the collection and analysis of data around food insecurity and the provision of services could be better matched. They will look at how clients, service providers, policymakers and local leaders can get better value from data and how they might use it to organise services in better ways. This Canalside Chat will be especially interesting to those looking to design and deliver services using data: public servants and data officers in central and local government; and chief data officers in organisations providing services to communities and local and central government. However, as with all our Canalside Chat events, it is open to all!

Convene with other leading thinkers to hear from our expert speakers, take part in a live Q&A, and network with fellow attendees over post-event refreshments.

This is a free, in-person event and will be held at Kings Place, King’s Cross, London.

About the speakers

Amanda Naylor has worked for the past 20 years in the third sector, international development and social care, supporting and safeguarding child victims, disabled children, looked-after children, young people subject to safeguarding procedures and young people in the youth justice system.

Since June 2022, she has taken on the role of CEO at Manchester Youth Zone, a vibrant youth and community provision with world-class facilities, working with over 1,000 children and young people and their families every week in North Manchester. Prior to this, Amanda headed up the national DFE-funded Covid-19 response Barnardo’s service ‘See, Hear Respond’, coordinating across the sector to get support to 100,000 children and families who were most in need. Through this programme she developed one of the largest datasets on the needs and outcomes of children and families during the pandemic.

Emma Thwaites has led the ODI’s communication team since 2012. She has 30 years’ strategic communication experience, gained in roles at the BBC and UK Cabinet Office.

A former journalist and editor, she currently works with ODI’s marketing, production and PR specialists and advises the board and the wider leadership team.
