New certificates launched to help everyone discover, understand, and use open data

The ODI is today launching Open Data Certificates to help everyone find, understand and use open data that is being released. The new certificates are being announced by CEO Gavin Starks at a G8 Summit event: Open for Growth. 

ODI Chairman Nigel Shadbolt knighted in Queen’s Birthday Honours

Professor Nigel Shadbolt the pioneering co-founder of the Open Data Institute (ODI), and one of the world’s leading experts in web science and has been knighted in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to science and engineering.

Professor Shadbolt is ODI Chairman and Head of the Web and Internet Science Group at the University of Southampton. He is one of the co-creators of the interdisciplinary field of Web Science.

ODI welcomes Information Economy Strategy – launched at G8 Innovation Conference

The ODI has welcomed the publication of the UK Government’s Information Economy Strategy. It is being officially launched by the Prime Minister at the G8 Innovation Conference in London. The event is being attended by a group of international business leaders, including the ODI’s CEO, Gavin Starks.

Open Data Institute Opens G8 Eyes to Power of Open Data

Global delegates will visit the ODI today to see first hand the progress being made by the organisation to drive innovation in the UK through greater transparency.

Open data is expected to be one of the Prime Minister’s key issues to be discussed at next week’s G8 summit. In preparation, leading innovators and thought leaders will attend a government organised Innovation Conference which will include visits to a range of innovative projects, including the ODI.

ODI calls for government to act fast in response to Shakespeare Review

The Open Data Institute (ODI) today welcomes the findings delivered by Stephan Shakespeare in his Independent Review of Public Sector Information, and calls for the Government to forge ahead, turning recommendations into real progress.

Gavin Starks, CEO of the ODI says: “This is the time to be bold and ambitious. What happens now on the back of this report is crucial in unlocking the value of open data. If the Government is serious about making data open, it has to be made available and fast.”

 

 

ODI seeks crime and justice data startups ahead of blue light hackathons this weekend

The ODI (Open Data Institute) is seeking digital startups, SME’s and developers interested in creating innovative new services from crime and justice data, to take part in its Immersion Programme. The next stage of the Programme is two affiliated crime-focused hackathons on the 27th and 28th April.  Both are free, still have spaces available and are an excellent way to get involved in the ODI project.

PAF decision "flies in the face" of government commitments - ODI

Reports that the Government will leave the Postcode Address FIle (PAF) in the ownership of the Royal Mail has been criticised by the ODI. Ministers plan to sell off the Royal Mail later this year and it's feared that the PAF will remain closed or prohibiitively expensive to businesses and individuals wanting to create products and services from open data.

ODI’s Jeni Tennison appointed to government’s new Open Standards Board

The ODI’s Technology Director, Jeni Tennison, has been selected to join other experts on the government’s Open Standards Board. The board is chaired by Liam Maxwell, the government’s Chief Technology Officer, and will advise on which open standards government IT should use in order to achieve better value for money and more flexibility.

ODI partners with Manchester Future Everything Summit

The FutureEverything Summit of Ideas and Digital Invention gets underway in Manchester today (Thursday) with the support of the ODI. The ODI is a partner in the delivery of a special two-day workshop targeted at small to medium sized businesses in the city.  Participants will learn how different business models can be driven by open data, and explore how all kinds of companies can use open data to improve performance, sales and customer satisfaction.
