ODI calls for government to act fast in response to Shakespeare Review

The Open Data Institute (ODI) today welcomes the findings delivered by Stephan Shakespeare in his Independent Review of Public Sector Information, and calls for the Government to forge ahead, turning recommendations into real progress.

Gavin Starks, CEO of the ODI says: “This is the time to be bold and ambitious. What happens now on the back of this report is crucial in unlocking the value of open data. If the Government is serious about making data open, it has to be made available and fast.”

 

 

ODI seeks crime and justice data startups ahead of blue light hackathons this weekend

The ODI (Open Data Institute) is seeking digital startups, SME’s and developers interested in creating innovative new services from crime and justice data, to take part in its Immersion Programme. The next stage of the Programme is two affiliated crime-focused hackathons on the 27th and 28th April.  Both are free, still have spaces available and are an excellent way to get involved in the ODI project.

PAF decision "flies in the face" of government commitments - ODI

Reports that the Government will leave the Postcode Address FIle (PAF) in the ownership of the Royal Mail has been criticised by the ODI. Ministers plan to sell off the Royal Mail later this year and it's feared that the PAF will remain closed or prohibiitively expensive to businesses and individuals wanting to create products and services from open data.

ODI’s Jeni Tennison appointed to government’s new Open Standards Board

The ODI’s Technology Director, Jeni Tennison, has been selected to join other experts on the government’s Open Standards Board. The board is chaired by Liam Maxwell, the government’s Chief Technology Officer, and will advise on which open standards government IT should use in order to achieve better value for money and more flexibility.

ODI partners with Manchester Future Everything Summit

The FutureEverything Summit of Ideas and Digital Invention gets underway in Manchester today (Thursday) with the support of the ODI. The ODI is a partner in the delivery of a special two-day workshop targeted at small to medium sized businesses in the city.  Participants will learn how different business models can be driven by open data, and explore how all kinds of companies can use open data to improve performance, sales and customer satisfaction.

Virgin Media and Which? Join Open Data Institute to Unlock Open Data Innovation

Communications and entertainment company Virgin Media and consumer watchdog Which? have today become the first major private-sector collaborators of the Open Data Institute (ODI). They will collaborate with ODI experts to unlock the potential of open data, to develop new services from existing assets, and to improve their customer experience.

Virgin Media and Which? are the first to join the ODI’s new membership programme. 

Code for Europe at the ODI

The ODI is hosting Code for Europe Fellows who are in London meeting open data entrepreneurs and sharing advice and ideas with one another. Code for Europe is working with city authorities across Europe to engage data technologists in exploring solutions to city challenges. 

ODI CEO joins Mayor’s "Smart London" board

Gavin Starks has joined a line-up of experts including leading academics, businesses and entrepreneurs to develop a ‘Smart London’ vision that puts technological innovation at the heart of making the capital a better place to live, work and invest.  

It forms part of Boris Johnson’s ambition for London to be the best big city in the world by helping businesses to harness technology and develop cutting edge ideas and products.

ODI Welcomes Fifth Start-up as Honest Buildings Takes up Residence

The US-based commercial real estate network, Honest Buildings (HB) has moved in to the ODI’s HQ.  HB, which has officially announced its expansion in to the UK this week, joins Locatable, Mastadon C, Open Corporates and Placr - start-up companies already based in the ODI's London office.
